What is an Opportunity Pig?

FCS created a swine ownership program—Opportunity Pork—very similar to the one that allows cattle producers to feed livestock at our beef confinement feedlot.
Interested feeders must a supply $30-per-pig down payment to cover cost of pigs and the rest of the costs associated with bringing those pigs to market. (Covered expenses include yardage, feed, veterinary services, insurance, and marketing fees.)
The day FCS purchases pigs for an owner, we will lock in the price of corn and soybean meal to feed those pigs. We will also hedge those pigs the same day.
FCS will sell the pigs according to those contracts and pay the bills. At that point, profit or loss will be shared by the owners of that pig group. We’ll use HerdStar
® software to develop a detailed closeout report.
