FCS Historical Timeline
-
1907: Farmers Mutual Incorporated Society was formed by local farmers who wanted a sound and fair business where they could buy and sell farm commodities.

1919: The cooperative changed its name to Farmers Cooperative Society.

1923: The cooperative installed its first feed mill.
-
1950: A new lumberyard office and a 55-foot scale were built.

1957: The Feed Formulation Department was officially started. The cooperative began mixing its own feed and delivering bulk feed to farms.

1963: Ireton Coop Association merged with Farmers Cooperative Society.

1981: FCS signed a Land O’Lakes hog feed franchise agreement.

1990: The cooperative purchased the Our Own Hardware store in downtown and added it to the How-To Store.

1992: FCS acquired the Little Rock Elevator location for use as a fertilizer and grain sourcing facility.

2002: FCS acquired Siouxland Coop, which included the Boyden, Melvin, Ritter, and Sanborn locations.

2007: Farmers Cooperative Society celebrated 100 years of business!

2013: FCS expanded by building the Worthing, SD, location.

2014: The Alcester, SD, location was acquired by the cooperative.

2016: The How-To Building Center completed a major remodel.

2017: The new feed mill at the Boyden location became operational.

2023: FCS opened the Union Grove facility, located near Beresford, SD.
2025: FCS opened Member’s Cut - a premium butchery that showcases our member’s products with a true farm to table promise.
